What is Filmbyrået Jack?
Filmbyrået Jack is a distribution collective for artistically ambitious film, started by eight film artists and curators. Our goal is to increase interest in and understanding of cinematic works, strengthen income for people who make film, and reach a wider audience in Norway and beyond.
What is happening to film?
The established film industry has long been artistically narrow. Cinemas are under pressure from commercialisation and digitalisation. And film distribution often creates distance between the work and the artists behind it, and disengages audiences. At the same time, more cinema spaces are opening up for artistic film: in arts centres and art institutions, at cinematheques and niche cinemas, and in commercial cinemas. That opens room for new film forms and new ideas about how film can be distributed. Many film artists feel at home in both the film and art worlds. The two fields are still stuck in old ways of working, but the boundaries can be lowered through stronger collaboration across screening venues. Those of us behind Jack want to push back monoculture and work for diversity, so many different films can reach audiences. In the post-pandemic cinema landscape, artistically ambitious film must take more space, and the physical cinema experience must be less about commerce and more about content, conversation, and diversity. That will make going to the cinema more exciting and meaningful. What will we do? Filmbyrået Jack will distribute film to many kinds of places: cinemas and arts centres, galleries and museums, festivals and pop-ups, cafés and venues, community halls and libraries, asylum reception centres and soup kitchens, film clubs and organisations’ spaces, schools and universities. We will build a network of screening venues that help one another create good encounters between film and audiences. We will make older works available alongside new ones, and organise screenings where audiences can enter dialogue with the film at several stages, from work in progress to finished work. We will invite art and film schools and other parts of the industry into conversations about distribution. Read more about who is behind Jack here!
